چکیده

n engl j med 369;12 nejm.org september 19, 2013 1178 325-bp ompA sequences revealed that the agent clustered with other R. sibirica subspecies and was most closely related to R. sibirica subspecies sibirica 246, which had been isolated from Dermacentor nuttalli in Russia (Fig. 1). In serum samples obtained from the patient, the titers of IgM and IgG antibodies against R. sibirica on indirect immunofluorescence assay increased from 1:32 and 1:64, respectively, in the acute phase to 1:4096 for IgM and for IgG in the convalescent phase. The study of this case was approved by the institutional review board of the Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences. The patient provided written informed consent. R. sibirica subspecies sibirica BJ-90 was initially isolated from D. sinicus in China in 1990,2,3 and it was detected in D. silvarum in Russia.4 Our case shows that this organism can cause human disease. Unlike patients infected with R. sibirica and R. heilongjiangensis in the same geographic region,5 this patient was severely ill with multiorgan dysfunction. Further investigation of the epidemiologic and clinical features of R. sibirica subspecies sibirica BJ-90 is required to distinguish it from other known tickborne infections.

Rickettsia monteiroi sp. nov., infecting the tick Amblyomma incisum in Brazil.

Free-living adult Amblyomma incisum ticks were collected in an Atlantic rainforest area at Intervales State Park, State of São Paulo, Brazil. From an A. incisum specimen, rickettsiae were successfully isolated in Vero cell culture by the shell vial technique. Rickettsial isolation was confirmed by optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and PCRs targeting portions of the rickettsi...

A novel Rickettsia species detected in Vole Ticks (Ixodes angustus) from Western Canada.

The genomic DNA of ixodid ticks from western Canada was tested by PCR for the presence of Rickettsia. No rickettsiae were detected in Ixodes sculptus, whereas 18% of the I. angustus and 42% of the Dermacentor andersoni organisms examined were PCR positive for Rickettsia. The rickettsiae from each tick species were characterized genetically using multiple genes. Rickettsiae within the D. anderso...

Detection of rickettsial DNA in ixodid ticks recovered from dogs and cats in Japan.

DNA from ticks recovered from 1137 dogs and 133 cats from all over Japan were examined for Rickettsia infection by citrate synthase gene (gltA)-based PCR and partial nucleotide sequencing. A total of 91 dog tick samples and 18 cat tick samples showed a single band of the appropriate size in the nested PCR. Sequence analysis was successfully performed on 102 samples. DNA of Rickettsia japonica o...

"Candidatus Rickettsia kellyi," India

We report the first laboratory-confirmed human infection due to a new rickettsial genotype in India, "Candidatus Rickettsia kellyi," in a 1-year-old boy with fever and maculopapular rash. The diagnosis was made by serologic testing, polymerase chain reaction detection, and immunohistochemical testing of the organism from a skin biopsy specimen.

Rickettsia Infection in Amblyomma Ticks

This work was performed to detect Rickettsia species of the spotted fever group in Amblyomma ticks likely to infest humans in rural areas from northwestern Argentina. Free-living ticks were collected and determined as Amblyomma tigrinum, Amblyomma neumanni and Amblyomma tonelliae. Rickettsia infection was determined by polymerase chain reactions which amplify fragments of the rickettsial genes ...
